One autumn evening in 1846 or 1847, the Deserter, tormented by hunger, knocked on the door of the Fragnière mayen. The man said his name was Charles Frédéric Brun, that he had come from France and that he could not return there. Hunted, the Deserter wandered. He knew how to compose prayers.
